Man's Three Oldest Questions
1. Job 23:3
If only I knew where I could find God!
The book of Job is one of the oldest in Holy Scripture. There we find three age old questions that people ask about God and eternity, and which God himself alone can answer.
Who was it that Job sought with that deep sigh? None other than God himself. Through sin mankind had distanced himself from God. But God takes pain to awaken the need to inquire and search after Him in the hearts of His creatures.
Man possess the faculty to conclude from the great works of creation that there is an invisible Creator (Roman 1:20). We can find God only if He reveals Himself. He has revealed both His existence and His power and glory in creation.
The revelation of God's nature, that He is light and love, is found elsewhere. All three of Job's queries find there answer in the Person of Jesus Christ. The answer to the question about Good is the incarnation of Christ, His death on the cross and His resurrection :"No one has ever seen God. God's only Son, the one who is closest to the Father's heart, has made him known." (John 1:18). What no religion can do for a seeker the Lord Jesus Christ did. He came from God's immediate presence to reveal Him on earth.
If you wish to know who God is, consider the life and death of Jesus Christ. In Him you recognize the greatness of God, who is not accountable to man, and His love towards us.
2. Job 9:2
"How can a person be righteous before God?"
When someone acknowledges that there is a God and that He is holy, the question must arise that Job asked in the Scripture above: how can a human being be righteous before such a holy God? In other words, how can the guilty stand in God's presence as justified persons?
Many tried to give an answer, mostly in terms of justification through works. They endeavor to perform as many good deeds as possible to attain righteousness that counts for God. But God's Word declares clearly that this way is a dead end.,"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). "God saved you through faith as an act of kindness. You had nothing to do with it. Being saved is a gift from God." (Ephesians 2:8). Good works cannot efface sins.
The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ alone are the answer to the question of righteousness in God's Knight. On this bases alone can God declare the sinner righteous. There is no other way.
If good were overlook sin, He would contradict Himself. However, the Lord Jesus Christ bore the judgment, the punishment of our guilt, in His sacrificial death on the cross of Calvary. Shies work of atonement fulfilled God's righteous demands regarding sin. Therefore He can declare everyone righteous who believe in the Lord Jesus and His work.
3. Job 14:14
If a man dies, shall he live again?
The third question that had occupied people from time immemorial is that of a life beyond the grave. The conviction that all is not over with death is characteristic of the suspicion that has been handed down over generations among every people.
Ancient mythology and many burial offerings discovered in archeological excavations testify that those people believed in life after death. Nor are eastern doctrines of reincarnation or the transmigration of souls anything new.
The most ancient human cultures thus indicate belief in life after death. God "has put eternity in their hearts" (Eccleciastes 3:11). That is what had always led people to be occupied with the life beyond. However, a valid answer cannot be found apart from God. Only a divine revelation can show us the truth. In its answer the Bible establishes two important facts:
There is life after death. Job knew it and puts his trust in the redeemer: "I know that my redeemer lives. . ., and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that I shall see God." (Job 19:25,26). The Son of God also testified of the resurrection of all mankind (John 5:21; 25,26).
The decision as to our eternal destiny is made during our life here on earth. Afterwards it is too late. Jesus Christ explained this in detail in the account in Luke 16:19-31.
No one should be deceived. We must decide where we shall spend eternity today. The Son of God said, "I tell you the truth. The person who believes in me will live forever. " (John 6:47)
