March 24th of this year (2014) would have been the 84th birthday of the legendary actor, Steve McQueen. The title above is a quotation of his. In one of his films seven adventurers come to the aid of a Mexican village that is constantly attacked by bandits. Because of the bandits' superior power they take quite a risk, but they are used to that. In his role as one of the adventurers Steve McQueen says that a man who once fell from the tenth storey occurred to him. As he passes every storey, he said, "So far everything is alright!" That became the adventurer's motto.
This motto, " So far everything is alright!" applied to the actor's life for a long time. God had played no part in it. When asked whether he believed in God, he once replied, "I believe in myself."
In 1979 he told one of his friends, "I had escaped death so often that I sometimes wonder why I am still alive. It is as if someone watching over me has cared for so many, many times."
During this time Steve had some very honest conversations with his flying instructor about God and the Bible. Until then, he had been chasing after fortune in the outside lane. Now, his sins were making him feel uneasy. He found forgiveness and peace through faith in Christ Jesus.
A few weeks later a diagnosis showed that he had incurable cancer. But Steve McQueen had placed his life in God's hands and felt secure in his final months. In that trust he entered eternity as a fifty-year-old.
Dear friend, you may have been living your life as did Steve McQueen, chasing after things without spiritual value, living in Sin as though neither God nor eternity exists. You may have been going through life, succeeding in everything thinking everything is alright. But just as Steve McQueen in all his dealings sensed that something is missing and sought for the Saviour whom he found, "Search, and you will find." (Matthew 7:7b), you can also find forgiveness and peace with God if you forsake sin and accept the Saviour. Take advantage of the grace He has been giving to you, and act as did Steve McQueen, then you won't be afraid of what comes after death knowing your life is secured in Christ. "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, he will see God's constant anger." (John 3:36)
