Once Dead

" You were once dead because of your failures and sins. You followed the ways of this present world and its spiritual ruler. This ruler continues to work in people who refuse to obey God." (Ephesians 2:1-2)

The police found the young man they had been searching for sitting on an arm chair in his flat. But He had been dead for more than two months! The television was still on,but,of course,He saw and heard nothing of the programme. Life in all its variety had been on the screen, but what benefit did the corpse had from it? He could neither move or do anything at all. What a horrific scene !
What has this to do with today's text from the Bible? Whoever shows no interest in God,asking after neither Him nor His will,is in God's estimation,"death in trespasses and sin". What a contrast: alive, yet spiritually death, that is, dead as far as God is concern. Such people do not trouble about Him,or worry about His demands: nor do they have His approval. For God they are insensitive and fruitless, just like the dead-a gloomy picture, but an apt one.
The young man sitting in front of the TV was sadly beyond help. Nothing could bring him back to life. This is what marks the difference between a clinically and a spiritually dead person. For the former there is no further hope of existence on earth; the latter, however, can escape from that depressing state by attending to the life-giving words of the Lord Jesus Christ. He said that the spiritually dead who listen to His voice "will live" (John 5:25).
Whoever listens to "the voice of the Son of God", that is, whoever commits himself to Him and follows Him in obedience, receives new life from God: eternal life that physical death can in no way affect.
"If you hear God speak today, don't be stubborn. Don't be stubborn like those who rebelled." (Hebrews 3:15). Open up your heart to Jesus, and let Him come in to transform you,so that you may be like Him and be eternally saved from the terror of hell.
