The Danger Of Self Belief

Let us now lie down in shame and cover ourselves with dishonor, for we and our ancestors have sinned against the Lord our God.From our childhood to this day we have never obeyed him. -Jeremiah 3:25.

The Danger Of Self Belief
This is a serious admission to have to make.We are by nature proud of ourselves and consider ourselves upright.Yet if we examine our conscience,we surely remember many a wrongdoing,be it great or small in our estimation.Orders given us were not carried out; we lied to avoid embarrassment; we cheated or deceived to gain an advantage for ourselves. These were sins against others, yet God took note of them.
How much more serious it is when the offence has been committed against God,who is holiness and righteousness in Person,as was seen in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ here on earth! However much it may go against the grain in modern thinking anyone in authority has the right to give orders to those under him,who are then committed to obedience. This is all the mnre necessary when one in authority is God,the Creator and Upholder of all men.
What commandments has He given? We are not speaking here of the so-called ten commandments, although we would do well to check how we adhere to them.God once spoke from heaven,"This is my dearly loved Son,who brings me great joy.Listen to him." -Matthew 17:5.The Lord Jesus Himself once appealed."Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life." -John 5:40.
Do we understand how our attitude towards God has dishonoured Him? The prophet Jeremiah confessed the failings of his people, identifying himself with them. This is the way to amend things: confessing, repentance and turning to God by accepting Jesus Christ in faith as our Savior. He died to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
