In continuation from where we stopped in the previous page,we saw that man was guilty as charged, and also responsible for his present condition. In fact,it was man's actions that made the world what it is today.Even the Bible says,"The earth suffers for the sins of its people, for they have twisted the instructions of God,violated his laws and broken his everlasting convenant." -Isaiah 24:5.We also saw that the just reward for sin is death and that if God were to punish the world for its sins,no one would be spared. But since God knew how weak and helpless people were and thus cannot meet his righteous demands as written here,"For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard." -Romans 3:23.Therefore,for God to restore man to his glorious and sin free nature as he was first created,God had to take an extreme measure by sending his only son Jesus Christ to bear the entire sin of the world upon himself. He was a holy and a perfect person who had no sin in him.Now let's take a look at what the Bible have to say about him.
Jesus as the promised saviour (Messiah)
Before Jesus was born,God had already promised to send a saviour as written in the following scriptures:
°ROPHESIES FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT°
"All right then, the Lord himself will choose the sign.Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel-"God is with us."" -Isaiah 7:14.
"For a child is born to us,a son is given to us.And the government will rest on his shoulders. These will be his royal titles: Wonderful Counselor,Mighty God,Everlasting Father,Prince of Peace. His ever expanding, peaceful government will never end.He will rule forever with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David. The passionate commitment of the Lord Almighty will guarantee this!" -Isaiah 9:6-7.
"One of the stump of David's family will grow a shoot-yes,a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him-the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.He will delight in obeying the Lord.He will never judge by appearance, false evidence,or hearsay." -Isaiah 11:1-3.
"Then David's throne will be established by love. From that throne a faithful king will reign, one who always does what is just and right." -Isaiah 16:5.
"Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem. It is firm,a tested and precious cornerstone that is safe to buid on.Whoever believes need never run away again." -Isaiah 28:16.
"Look,a righteous king is coming! And honest princes will rule under him." -Isaiah 32:1.
"And when he comes,he will open the eyes of the blind and unstop the ears of the deaf. The lame will leap like a deer, and those who cannot speak will shout and sing!" -Isaiah 35:5-6.
"Look at my servant, whom I strengthen. He is my choosen one,and I am pleased with him.I have put my Spirit upon him.He will reveal justice to the nations. He will be gentle-he will not shout or raise his voice in public. He will not crush those who are weak or quench the smallest hope.He will bring full justice to all who have been wronged. He will not stop until truth and righteousness prevail throughout the earth.Even distant lands beyond the sea will wait for his instruction." -Isaiah 42:1-4.All these scriptures are only but a few out of many others not quoted. However, you can clearly see that God has planned for a Saviour by prophesying of his coming. Now lets see whether what God prophesied about him, really came through by looking at the New Testament of the Bible.
°FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT°
Remember that initially we saw from the book of Isaiah 11:1 which says "Out of the stump of David's family will grow a shoot-yes,a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root, and also that a
"virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel-"God is with us." Now this is how it all began in the New Testament.
"Now this is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother,Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit.Joseph, her fiance',being a just man, decided to break the engagement quietly,so as not to disgrace her publicly.
As he considered this,he fell asleep, and an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream."Joseph, son of David," the angel said,"do not be afraid to go ahead with your marriage to Mary. For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son,and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."All of this happened to fulfil the Lord's message through his prophet:
"Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son,and he will be called Immanuel (meaning,God is with us)."
When Joseph woke up,he did what the angel of the Lord commanded. He brought Mary home to be his wife, but she remained a virgin until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.
The above quoted scriptures briefly narates how the Saviour (Jesus,Messiah,Immanuel) was born.It was an extraordinary event because it was divinely arranged by God with man having nothing to do with.Earlier on,we saw that it was prophesied in the Old Testament that the Saviour would be born through the family line of King David-a man after God's heart in the following scriptures:
"Out of the stump of David's family . . ." -Isaiah 11:1.
"Then David's throne will be establish by love.From that throne a faithful king will reign,one who always does what is good and right." -Isaiah 16:5.And that was exactly what happened.The man Joseph is from the line of David's family.We also saw that it was prophesied that a virgin would conceive a child as written below;
"The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel-"God is with us"." -Isaiah 7:14.And it also happened exactly as prophesied. The young woman was a virgin and engaged to be married to Joseph as quoted from Matthew 1:18-25.After the bady was born, the name Jesus was given to him as directed by God.
Therefore,if you recalled from the beginning we saw that the name Jesus was not an ordinary name, but a name with a purpose and a mission which is to save sinful man from his sinful ways and to teach man the right way to follow.Even man acknowledged that he is a sinner as quoted below:
"But we are not godly. We are constant sinners,so your anger is heavy on us.How can people like us be saved?" -Isaiah 64:5.Based on the scripture above, for people like us to to be saved,no amount of sacrifices offered by us can save us because we already saw earlier that God is no longer interested in anything offered to Him by man.And since nothing that comes from man is enough to please God,God on his own decided to bring an alternative by sending down his Son Jesus Christ-the promised Messiah (Saviour) to be the one and only ultimate sacrifice that must be offered if man must be saved from his sins. But hence we have seen how he came just as it was prophesied,we will now see why He came and how He did what needs to be done.
How the ultimate sacrifice was made.
Before Jesus came,he was fully aware of the task ahead of him.It wasn't an easy task, but because of the love he has for fallen man,he had to complete this task in order to reconcil man back to his maker (God).Though the Jews were expecting a Saviour, but what they failed to understand is the main purpose of his coming. They are more concerned about physical restoration than the spiritual which happens to be the main purpose of his coming-to restore fallen man back to his maker (God).Even today, some of them still don't believe in Jesus.Though God made most of these promises to Israel, but he also said,"And my blessings are for Gentiles (other nations),too, when they commit themselves to the Lord.Do not let them think I consider them second-class citizens. And my blessings are also for the eunuchs. They are as much mine as anyone else." -Isaiah 56:3.He also said,
"For the Lord Almighty will say,"Blessed be Egypt,my people.Blessed be Assyria, the land I have made.Blessed be Israel,my special possession!"" -Isaiah 19:25.
Therefore, though the Saviour would come through God's chosen people (Israel),yet his purpose for coming is not just to restore Israel, but the entire human race back to it's maker (God). And though the promises are mearnt for Israel, but God in his love and mercies made it possible for other nations to tap from this blessings and promises only if they commit themselves to the Lord. And to do so,they most believe in His Son Jesus whom He had sent.
Now,we've seen earlier on that the law was given through Moses after the exodus from Egypt in order to provide guidance to the people on how to serve God faithfully and stop sinning,we also saw that the people could not keep or obey the law and thus break it over and over again. In fact, the law revealed their true nature as sinners which is why they kept breaking the law.
More so,since the day the law was given,to the time that Jesus came, there was not a single person who perfectly kept the law without breaking a single one.For this reason,Jesus being God Himself came in human form and lived among his people, and also taught the people the way of the Lord.Though he came in human form,he underwent all that every normal person would undergo yet he did not sin a single bit.He saw what was going on and how sinful his people Israel were not to mention what was happening in other nations. He performed many miracles as prophesied in Isaiah 35:5-6,"He will open the eyes of the blind and unstop the ears of the deaf. The lame will leap like a dear and those who cannot speak will shout and sing!".He even raised the dead and performed many other wonders that shook the entire land. Thus, many called him the savior (Messiah) saying that they have never seen something amazing like this before thus, many followed him. However,His task is to maintain his perfection as God in human form without breaking the law and also to teach the people about God's love for them and the need to turn away from their sinful ways in order to escape the coming judgment.
