The world is indeed full of many religions which believe in one thing or the other.Though most of these religions somehow have something in common, there is however only one religion that is unique and completely different from the rest.Every religion has a beginning and it's source.Tt's source determines whether that religion and it's teachings are true and genuine.
However,we will be focusing on one of these religions known as Christianity.
Christianity today,is figuratively the world's largest and most persecuted religion as many people including some of it's followers, believe that it's teachings are hard to understand and accept.Even in the Holy Bible [the only Book used by Christians],some people also complained thus rejecting it's teachings. They said,"This is very hard to understand .How can anyone accept it?" -John 6:60.Actually they maybe right,no body would just accept such strong teachings that easily. But the problem however,is not the teachings but the people themselves. They wanted the usual thing-something that would please and make them happy and comfortable as they are. What they were expecting was completely different from what they heard. But it didn't just stopped there,it's totally the opposite of their motives for following Him (Jesus). They were only interested in what satisfies them physically which is contrary to the main reason why Jesus came.
Even today, those who find His teachings hard to understand and accept,is simply because of the same reasons. They thought accepting and becoming a Christian takes away their freedom as the teachings are completely against most of the things they so much enjoy doing of which they find difficult to let go.
Moreso,Christianity is a religion that is against the world s system and way of life which has become part of all it's inhabitants.Hence we humans are used to the pattern of this world,it surely won't be easy to believe and accept true teachings that is against our usual way of life.
All other religions have carnal sources and beginnings. They are all earthly, that's why people are easily carried away by them.Their teachings allow total degree of freedom and promote evil hence it's not from God.The world is attracted to such religions hence it permits evil.
Why is Christianity so different from the others and what is it all about?
As stated earlier, the source and beginning of each religion play's an important role on this matter. Therefore,to answer the above question is to go back to the beginning.Christians believe in one true God who is the beginning of all things. In the book of Genesis chapter 1,God created everything. In verse 26,He said,"Let us make people in our image,to be like ourselves. . . .
So God created people in his own image; God patterned them after himself; male and female he created them." -Genesis 1:26-27.Please take note of these words: us,our, and ourselves as written in verse 26.These words are in plural form meaning more than one. However,in verse 27,it is still God that created them. Now the question is why would God use these words if He is doing the creation work alone? The answer is simply because he is not alone in the creation work after all,and the others working with Him [which we would focus on later] are also part of Him which is why in verse 27,only the name God was mentioned. But if He is not alone, then who are the others?
Let's carefully take a look at what this verses said,"v1.The Lord appeared again to Abraham while he was camped near the oak grove belonging to Mamre. One day about noon,as Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent,
v2.he suddenly noticed three men standing nearby. He got up and ran to meet them, welcoming them by bowing low to the ground.
v21."I am going down to see whether or not these reports are true. Then I will know."
v22.The two other men went on towards Sodom, but the Lord remained with Abraham for a while." -Genesis 18:1-2,21-22.You can see that in verse 1,God appeared to Abraham and verse 2 confirmed God's appearance in the form of three men.Going down to verse 21, God told Abraham,"I am going down to see whether or not these reports are true. Then I will know." Remember that the men were three in number, but God used the word "I" in reference to all of them.In verse 22,we saw that the two other men went toward sodom, while God remained with Abraham. Now,if God said "I am going" but later remained with Abraham while the other two went toward Sodom,it then means that He is still the other two which is why He used the word "I".
Abraham could not explain what really happened, but being in the spirit,he was able to know that it was God.Therefore, the above revelations explains why God used the words "us","our",and "ourselves" in Genesis 1:26.However,since the one who remained with Abraham is God as written, then let's find out who the other two are.To do this, let's go to the New Testament in the book of John 1:1 which says,"1.In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God,and he was God.
2.He was in the beginning with God.
3.He created everything there is.Nothing exists that he didn't make.
4.Life itself was in him,and this life gives light to everyone.
9.The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was going to come into the world.
10.But although the world was made through him,the world didn't recognize him when he came.
11.Even in his own land and among his own people,he was not accepted.
14.So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us.He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father.
18.No one has ever seen God.But his only Son,who is himself God,is near to fhe Father's heart; he has told us about Him." -John 1:1-4,9-11,14,18.
Furthermore, considering the verses above, the second person in God is referred to as the "Word","Son",also known as Jesus Christ [the promised Messiah] to whom we will be focusing on later. But to specifically find out more about Jesus Christ and the truth about who He really is,please click this link.
Now let's go to the next person by looking at Genesis 1:2,the BIble says,"The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters." Here, the Bible did say "God" but instead,it specifically used "Spirit of God".
In the gospel according to John in chapter 16vs7,which also says,"7.But it is actually best for you that I go away, because if I don't,the Counselor won't come.If I do go away,he will come because I will send him to you.
8.And when he comes,he will convince the world of its sin,and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
13.When the Spirit of truth comes,he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas,he will be telling you what he heard. He will tell you about the future.
14.He will bring me glory by revealing to you whatever he receives from me.
15.All that the Father has is mine; this is what I mean when I say the Spirit will reveal to you whatever he receives from me." -John 16:7-8,13-15.
This is Jesus telling his disciples about the Holy Spirit knowing that his time to leave this world had come.He referred to the Holy Spirit as a "Comforter","Counselor",and "Spirit of truth". Therefore,we now have God the Father [Almighty],God the Son [Messiah],and God the Holy Spirit [Spirit of God].
In the Old testament of the Bible,God the Father talked about the Son as the promised Messiah, and in the New testament we saw that God the Son talked about the Holy Spirit.Apart from these three,no other person was mentioned except the angels who were themselves God's creation. This are the reasons why the words "us","our",and "ourselves" were used in Genesis 1:26.
There are many Scriptures in the Bible where God spoke and revealed himself to the prophets and his people, but that is not where our focus is at the moment.
Therefore, let's go back to the main issue at stake which is Christianity,it's source and what it is all about. And considering the revelations above,we will now be focusing on the second person in God which is God the Son also known as Jesus Christ. To discover more about Jesus, please click this link. The link provided will lead you to a special page that reveals the truth about Jesus and who he really is.We recommend that you click and read it then return to this page to continue.
Now let's focus on what Christianity is,how it came about and who are the true Christians.
Firstly,What is Christianity?
Christianity is simply a religion that is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and the belief that He is the Son of God and God himself. In the previous page,we discovered Jesus as the second person in God.The following Scriptures confirmed Him as the Son of God:
Who but God goes up to heaven and comes back down? Who holds the wind in his fists? Who wraps up the oceans in his cloak? Who has created the whole wide world? What is his name-and his Son's name? -Proverb 30:4.The name Jesus was not mentioned in the entire books of the Old testament, instead it was God all the way almost on every page. However, those who were very close and hears God regularly at that time, sensed that He had a Son.
As Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he(John the Baptist) saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him.And a voice from heaven said,"This is my beloved Son and I am fully pleased with him". -Matthew 3:16-17.Here,we can see Jesus (God the Son),the Spirit of God(God the Holy Spirit),and God the Father who spoke last. But please know that the Holy Spirit is not a dove nor connected to it in any way.It only manifested Itself in that form at that moment.
"You are my Son.Today I have become your Father." -Acts 13:33.
No one has ever seen God.But his only Son (Jesus),who is himself God,is near to the Father's heart; he has told us about him. -John 1:18.
And a voice from the cloud said,"This is my beloved Son,and I am fully pleased with him.Listen to him." -Matthew 17:5.This is again God the Father speaking.Even Jesus himself called God his Father:
v40.For it is my fathers will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. . .
v44.For people can't come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me. . . -John 6:40,44.
The Father and I are one.
At my father's direction I have done many things. . .
The father is in me,and I am in the Father. -John 10:30,32,38.These are only but a few among many scriptures that spoke of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and God himself.
Moreso, now that we have seen and know who Jesus Christ really is,we will now go to the second question.
How did Christianity came about?
Actually, the name Christianity came as a result of an event that took place in the book of Acts 11:26 which says,When he found him,he brought him back to Antioch. Both of them stayed there with the church for a full year, teaching great numbers of people. It was there at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians." -Acts 11:26.
The name "Christian" which means like-Christ,was given to the believers at Antioch because they lived their lives based on the teachings of Jesus. They taught and performed miracles as Jesus did when he was still on earth.Infact, the people at Antioch saw Christ in them thus called them Christians.
Therefore, they were called Christians after Jesus Christ whom they believed and accepted as their Lord and Saviour. Now,if they are been called Christians after Jesus Christ,it then means that Jesus Christ is the source of Christianity. And if Jesus Christ is the source of Christianity, being the Son of God and God himself as we saw earlier on,it then means that Christianity is a project that was planned long before the world was created. And when the appointed time to execute this project came,no one was qualified enough to execute it except Jesus Christ the Son of God.He was the perfect executer of this very project. The name "Jesus" was infact given to him by God the Father himself as written here,"And she will have a son,and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." -Matthew 1:21.
Furthermore,you can now see that Christianity is not just an ordinary religion like the others,but a divine religion whose source is God himself.Now to the third question;
Who are true Christians?
Based on the above revelations,we saw that Christians ought to be like-Christ.Those who believed and accepted Jesus into their lives and also abide by his teachings and doctrines alone.True Christians are those who are strongly and totaly connected to Jesus Christ, those who trust only in Jesus with the whole of their hearts, and those who are living for Him.Anybody who claims to be a Christian but still follows and connects himself in any way with other forms of religions or doctrines that are not of Christ,is not a Christian! Please also take note of this: in the Christian faith today, there are many Churches whose teachings and doctrines are in conflict with the real Biblical teachings as taught by our Lord Jesus Christ himself. They did this in order to satisfy their carnal desires thus bringing worldliness into the Church which is however, contrary to what the Bible said here,"Therefore, come out from them and seperate yourselves from them, says the Lord.Don't touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you." -2 Corinthians 6:17.Here,you can see that a Christian ought not to connect himself with the world's system and it's way of life, but instead he is to come out of it and separates himself completely before the Lord would welcome him and he can now be called a Christian."Stop loving this evil world and all that it offers you,for when you love the world, you show that you do not have the love of the Father in you." -1 John 2:15.By loving this world,it simply means loving the pattern, system and ways in which the world does it's things. The world's system is so corrupt and filthy which is why you can clearly see how evil and wicked the world is today. The world system can never produce anything good and thus wins God's heart and confidence.Though the world was perfectly made at the beginning, but man has successfully destroyed the perfection of that which was once perfect and thus, had to suffer the consequences of his actions.
Therefore,Christianity must never in any way be connected to the world and any body or Church that dare tries to do that, has cut-off itself from the Source and therefore can never be considered a Christian even if it still bares the Christian name unless it returns back to the true teachings and doctrines of Jesus Christ. In fact, there are Scriptures in the Bible where the Christian faithfuls were cautioned to keep themselves away from any wrong teaching or doctrines that is not of Jesus Christ which we'll be looking at in a separate study.
Finally,Does Christianity have anything in common with other religions?
The answer is a simple NO simply because none of this religions believed in Jesus nor accepted the fact that he is the Son of God,yet not just the Son of God,but God himself as we have seen earlier. And without Jesus, there will be absolutely no reason for Christianity to exist.Though many worldly scholars or organized groups of persons may be working really hard to find a possible way of connecting Christianity with other religions by any means possible, but the truth is that it can never be possible. Please know that Christianity is not about any Church, group, pope, ministers, general oversears or any powerful and highly respected persons you can ever imagine. It is also not about the idol representing the so called Mary the mother of Jesus which is highly respected and worshipped by the Catholic Church,it is all about Jesus Christ. As stated earlier, any Church or individuals doctrines or way of worship that is not as taught by Jesus Christ, disqualifies that Church or individuals from being Christians.
Moreso, the Catholic Church due to their way of worship and doctrines, gave the world a good reason to believe that Christianity indeed had something in common with other religions.Take a close look at this images,
You can see the pope s actions signifying the oneness of Christianity and Islam. If the pope's saying that both religions have something in common, being the head of the Catholic church, you should expect all the Catholic church around the world to agree with him.
However, we'll like to state categorically clear that no matter how the Catholic Church is well respected by many, they do not have the supreme power nor authority from the Lord and thus cannot speak for the entire Christian Church. In fact, they cannot be regarded as Christians if their teachings contradicts that of Jesus Christ himself. Therefore, whatever they do or any action they take, they'll be doing it on their own.And if the world successfully connects itself to the Church of God through the Catholic Church or any other church, that will never mean that the entire Christian Church is connected to the world.
Therefore,do not be deceived.Christianity is not any man's doing, but God's and nothing can change that.Another thing we'll also want you to know is that,a person is not a Christian simply because he does good, was born and raised in a Christian family,he is a Jew,he goes to church,he reads the Bible or tracks,he is powerful and highly respected or even owns a charity organization. But a Christian is someone who passed through what this Scripture says,"For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God,and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved." -Romans 10:9-10.It is however, sad that many people today believe that just being self-righteous,or by being faithful in carrying out relgious activities are enough to earn them a place in the presence of God which is absolutely not true. The teachings of Jesus Christ were very simple and straight forward. His final charge to his disciples were,"With my authority, take this message of repentance to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem: "There is forgiveness of sins for all who turn to me."
You are witnesses of all these things." -Luke 24:47-48.You can see here that Jesus said "There is forgiveness of sins for all who turn to me",He never said to his mother (Mary),father(Joseph),disciples, prophets or anybody else except to Him alone.Hear what he also said here,"Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you." -Matthew 28:20.He did not say the commands, teachings,or doctrines of any Church or individuals, but His only.
It is therefore clear that Christianity is all about Jesus,His teachings,His doctrines, and His will.Any other thing apart from this,is not Christianity.Actually, there is much to write, but the most important thing is not how much is written, but for you to discover the truth even if it's written in few words. Please don't be a Christian simply because your parents are, because of your friends, because you have no choice,or because you were forced to,but because you believe and accepted Jesus as your Lord and personal Savior.Becoming a Christian is a personal decision which no one can decide for you.You must not reject this free gift of salvation offered to you by our Lord Jesus simply because you think the world has all that you need of which i'm very sure you're also aware that someday you'll die and leave them all behind. Also know that the way of the world leads to death, but the way of the Lord leads to eternal life. It's up to you to decide and please know this; After death, there won't be a second chance. It's either now or never!
