What is repentance precisely?
What is repentance precisely in God's mind,as the Bible teaches it?There is a lot of misunderstanding on this issue.Is repentance merely a religious exercise?Does it consist in seeking to eradicate sins once committed through prayers or good deeds?
Recently I wanted to give a young lady a booklet on this subject."No,I don't need repentance.I have three small children ."Three young children may cause a mother a lot of work and trouble,even worry ,but can that compensate for repentance?Is it possible to balance one's debit account with God through one's efforts?That is the crux of the matter.
Who is at all aware of the amount of one's guilt before God,even if no serious crimes have been committed?A single sin suffices to justify God's condemnation,and nobody can pay for a single one:the prce is too high,indeed,so high that only God could pay it.Nothing coming from mankind meets His holiness.
But thank God! He paid the price through Jesus Christ at the cross of Calvary.Repentance means judging oneself before God,turning to Him and confessing one's guilt in sincere remorse.Whoever does so,God can point Him to the only One,Jesus Christ who "is the sacrifice for our sins.He takes away not only our sins but the sins of all the world." -1 John 2:2,and out of pure grace remit the debt."Deliver him from going down to the pit;I have found a ransom." -Job 3:24.The ransom was paid by the Lord Jesus Christ.He sacrificed Himself,a ransom for all who believe in Him.
