When we were utterly helpless,Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. . .
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. -Romans 5:6,8.
Man's inability to help himself
In April 1987 429 parachutists met in Arizona.A whole series of parachute jumps were to take place. For had just jumped from a height of 8,500 feet and were about to group in formation when 31 year Debbie Williams hit a colleague's rucksack and started to plunge unconcious towards the earth without her parachute opening.
Gregory Robertson, the instructor of the team, was hovering 40 feet above the others. With his experience of 1700 jumps behind him,he quickly saw the danger and set about reaching Debbie in time.He had only a few seconds.Drawing in his arms and legs,Robertson plunged headfirst and with a speed of 180 m.p.h. reached Debbie at a height of about 4,000 feet,so that he could first open her parachute at 2,000 feet, then his own. They glided to the ground,Debbie, still unconcious landing on her back. She suffered some injury, but Gregory had saved her life.
Debbie's helplessness is an apt illustration of man's inability to redeem himself. When it concerns the disturbed relationship with God and salvation for eternity, man is powerless and rushing towards death.Yet in our greatest need God showed His love in giving His own Son to die to save us.Whoever wishes can avail himself of that great gift by faith.
