Jesus alone can save
Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564),one of the greatest artists of western culture,a painter,sculptor and architect,left a number of masterly poems to posterity.In his last sonnet he draws up the balance of his life as an 80-year-old.He compares his life with a journey in a boat tossed by a rough sea.He is aware that at his destination he must give an account of all his deeds.
Michelangelo knew that his dedication to art could not help him in this matter.So he looked aheadwame ended with the words,"Painting and carving do not bring the soul salvation,but only turning to the love of God that receives us at the cross with open arms."
The promise given in today's text is the foundation here,for the "lifting up" refers to the Saviours crucifixtion.
Michelangelo's awareness that one's own activity gives no justification as God's judgment is indispensable for everyone.Only turning to the One who bore the punishment for sins at the calvary can "bring the soul salvation'',i.e. bring about the forgiveness of guilt and eternal life.
The crucified One outstreched arms are the most impressive expression of God's love.God does noj want man to perish.He calls him back into fellowship with Him and wants to receive him as His child.
Jesus testified of Himself:"And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness,so I,the Son Man,must be lifted up on a pole,so that anyone who believes in me will have eternal life." -John 3:14-15.

The truth is,what ever you have achieved,aquired,accumulated or possessed in this life,will definitely end in this life.Think of all the most influential people you knew so well,think of their achievments and all the are beng remembered for.Was it able to save or stop them from dying?
