And yet you say,' I haven't done anything wrong.Surely he isn't angry with me!' Now i will punish you severely because you claim you have not sinned. -Jeremiah 2:35.
The assumption that leading a good life will earn God's favour,so that He will not condemn a person,is still a common belief today.Over 2,500 years ago after the prophet Jeremiah record the above verse,it is infact a fateful fallacy. It held no sway in Jeremiah's day.God countered it then by declaring the assertion to be the very reason why He would pass judgement on whoever claimed to be innocent.Since God's verdict on mandkind is "All have sinned" (Romans 3:23),who can dare to maintain that he is an exception?
Do not underestimate God's standard of righteousness.Nothing short of perfection will satisfy Him.He does not turn a blind eye to our shortcomings.Nor will He lower His standard to a level that satisfies us.Our omniscient God has a thorough knowledge of our whole life with all our failings.Whoever assumes that God can hold no sin against him is heading for judgement. The proof of every sinner's error will then stare hin in the face;he will recieve a just sentence; eternal condemnation in hell.
Our God is,however, gracious. He wants all to be saved. That is why He sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world (1Timothy 2:4; 1 John 4:14).Jesus Christ bore God's righteous judgement over sin by dying for lost sinners on the cross. But everyone must acknowledge his guilt before God and trust in the work of Christ personally for salvation. That is exactly what Paul preached:"I have had one message for Jews and Gentiles alike-the necessity of turning from sin and turning to God,and of faith in our Lord Jesus." -Acts 20:21
