Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. -Psalms 119:105.
Jesus,the best companion
The German painter,Ludwig Richter (1803-1884) tells this incident in his life:
There was a knock at the door. When i called out "Come in!" a man entered, whose facial expression suggested diligence and honesty. He told me that he was a sailor, the helmsman on a Dutch vessel that had been shipwrecked. There was something attractive in the man's firm, yet calm, modest manner;so i gave him some money.
He thanked me,regarding me with a grateful look,as if he wished to show me some kindness, and said,"I have a long journey ahead of me,but i have a good companion!"-"Oh, that is fortunate," I replied feelingly, since i had no-one."Who is it?"-"It is non other than my faithful God.And here",he said, pulling a small book out of his breast pocket,"I have His word. When i speak to Him,He answers me from this.So i can safely continue, young sir!"
He thanked me again and left. What he said, however, had struck me like an arrow, and the sting stayed in my heart for a long time.I had not thought of God; for me He was a distant, indefinite power. And that poor man spoke and looked as if he knew Him well and had lots of contact with Him,which gave him courage and confidence.
His tiny treasure, the little book was unknown to me.I had never read a Bible. This brief incident was soon forgotten owing to fresh impressions, although it was not stifled altogether.Later the memory of it re-emerged,and i then recognized the start of a series of experiences in my life which had a significant effect on the development of my spiritual life.
It's good to know the lord. This poor sailor though had nothing physically to boast of,however,he has an invisible, reliable, trustworthy and a faithful friend whose name is Jesus. With Jesus by his side,he is sure of safety and most importantly,he is sure of eternal life. The question now is,what about you? It's not too late.
